Small Moments of Connection with Your Little One

Small Moments of Connection with Your Little One at Step By Step Nursery Dubai

Ramadan is a time of pause. Of gentleness. Of intention.
For young children, the meaning of Ramadan is not found in long explanations, it is found in moments.

  • Moments of calm.
  • Moments of kindness.
  • Moments of connection.

This guide offers simple, practical ways to build reflection and connection into your everyday routines; in the car, before bed, during
Iftar preparation, or in the quiet minutes before sleep.

1. Teddy on the Tummy (Grounding Breathing)

When to use it: Before bed, before Iftar, after a busy day, or when emotions feel big.

Why it works: Deep belly breathing regulates the nervous system. It slows the heart rate, reduces stress hormones, and brings both adult and child into the present moment.

How to do it:
1. Lie down together.
2. Place a teddy on your child’s tummy.
3. Breathe in slowly through your nose for 4 seconds – watch teddy rise.
4. Breathe out slowly for 4 seconds – watch teddy fall.
5. Repeat 8–5 times

Add gentle reflection:
After breathing, whisper:

“What made you smile today?”

“How did you show kindness today?”
“What are we grateful for tonight?”

Keep it short. Keep it calm.
Silence is welcome.

2. The 5-4-3-2-1 Senses Game (Anywhere Reflection)

When to use it:
In the car. Waiting for Iftar. Before bed. Walking outdoors.
This builds presence, awareness, and emotional regulation.

Try this together:

5 things we can see

“Can you see the moon? The lanterns? The trees?”

4 things we can hear
“Cars? The call to prayer? Our breathing?”

3 things we can feel
“The seat? My hand? Your clothes?”

2 things we can smell
“Dinner cooking? The night air?”

1 thing we are thankful for
For toddlers, simplify to 1-2-3.
For FS children, let them lead.

3. Kindness jar

Place a small jar on your table.
Each evening, add one small note

1. “I helped set the table.”
2. “I shared my toy.”
3. “I waited patiently.”

Read them together at the end of the week.
Children learn that kindness is noticed. And repeated.

4. The Moonlight Question? (Bedtime Reflection)

Keep it simple. One question only.

“What felt peaceful today?”
“When did you feel proud?”
“Who did we help?”

No correcting. No extending. Just listening.

This builds emotional literacy far more effectively than long lectures.

5. Hand on Heart Moment

Sit together.

Place one hand on your heart, one on your child’s.

Say slowly:
“In this family we are loving, we are kind and we are caring. We can carrythat in our hearts.”

Hold for 10 seconds.
Children remember how moments feel, not how long they lasted.

Why This Matters

    • Connection builds regulation.
    • Regulation builds reflection.
    • Reflection builds character.

In early childhood, we are building the foundations of empathy, gratitude and calm.
And that begins with you.
